Alan Cumming was born on the 27th January 1965 in Aberfeldy, Scotland. His family lived nearby in Dunkeld, where his father, Alex, was a forester for Atholl Estate. The family (Alex, mother Mary, big brother Tom and Alan) moved to Fassfern near Fort William soon after, before moving to the east coast of Scotland in 1969 where Alan's dad took up the position of Head Forester of Panmure Estate, and it is here Alan grew up. Jim Carrey’s 1994 hit The Mask gets a poor sequel courtesy of Cats & Dogs director Lawrence Guterman. This time, the magical Nordic relic falls into the hands of an aspiring cartoonist (Jamie Kennedy), who fathers a son while wearing it. The baby is born with all the eye-popping powers of Carrey’s original character, turning his dad’s world upside down with nonstop cartoon-type mayhem. Although the mixture of live action, special effects and animation demonstrates a certain crude imagination, the sequel can’t touch its predecessor’s dynamic visual style. In fact, every aspect of this risible comedy is substandard in comparison, from the casting to the frequent movie references. Even when sporting the Mask, Kennedy lacks charisma, while his singing and dancing infant looks downright creepy. Throw in an ineffectual villain (Alan Cumming, as the Norse god Loki) and the obligatory fart gag and you’ve got a barrel-scraping cash-in that feels more like a TV show than a Hollywood picture.

Full of trademark themes and characteristic compositions, Stanley Kubrick’s final film is also his most fascinatingly flawed. With its style often resembling 1970s European art house movies, it lacks the morbidity to pass as a Buñuelian satire, and is too stately and serious to succeed as a commercial enterprise. Tom Cruise — as the doctor recklessly seeking a means of avenging his wife’s fantasised infidelity — is far too controlled for his character’s fraught nocturnal adventures to be plausible. Nicole Kidman, as his wife, is less visible, but simmers with potential erotic danger. Despite expectations, this is a disappointingly conservative conclusion to a career spent pushing back cinematic boundaries. Perhaps, after so long without directing a movie, Kubrick cared too much.
