Movies starring Bruce Dern

Bruce Dern had established himself as the movies' premier heavy, playing sociopaths, psychotics and just plain criminals by the time he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Coming Home (1978). Some perceptive critics had noted that Dern was a finer actor than his roles generally allowed one to believe, repelled as one was by the neurotic persona that Dern was able to project and that casting directors capitalized on. 'Jack Nicholson' (qv), a close friend, claimed that Dern was the best of the new breed of actors who had been born just before World War II and wer ...  show all

John Smith is an amoral gunslinger in the days of Prohibition. On the lam from his latest (unspecified) exploits, he happens upon the town of Jericho, Texas. Actually, calling Jericho a town would be too generous—it has become more like a ghost town, since two warring gangs have ‘driven off all the decent folk.’ Smith sees this as an opportunity to play both sides off against each other, earning himself a nice piece of change as a hired gun. Despite his strictly avowed mercenary intentions, he finds himself risking his life for his, albeit skewed, sense of honor….

More an intense portrait of doomed romance than a serial-killer thriller, writer/director Patty Jenkins’s brutal biopic of prostitute-turned-multiple murderer Aileen Wuornos burrows deep into the woman’s psyche with the help of an Oscar-winning turn from Charlize Theron. While her physical transformation may have caught the Academy’s eye, Theron’s performance goes beyond the weight-gain and dental prosthetics, finding both compassion and coldness in Wuornos’s descent into homicidal mania. Aileen’s first kill is in self-defence, escaping from a “client”, but the impulse soon escalates into murder as she fights both to survive and to protect her burgeoning relationship with the naive outcast lesbian Selby (a superbly understated Christina Ricci). In other hands, this could have become overwrought melodrama, but Jenkins skilfully mines the humanity within the sensationalism to come up with something that is both tender and chilling — and ultimately heartbreaking.

Jack Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson’s follow-up to Five Easy Pieces was this often pretentious yet absorbing study of two brothers. Nicholson is a radio presenter, intellectual and withdrawn; his brother, Bruce Dern, is an aspiring property developer, brash, married to Ellen Burstyn and living in a hopeless dream world. Set in a windy, charmless Atlantic City, its original title was The Philosopher King, and the final title derives from the American version of Monopoly. Some rate Nicholson’s performance as a career best, and his wistful monologues at the radio microphone are indeed brilliant; others may find the cold, cerebral atmosphere easy to resist.

Texan Charles Farmer left the Air Force as a young man to save the family ranch when his dad died. Like most American ranchers, he owes his bank. Unlike most, he’s an astrophysicist with a rocket in his barn - one he’s built and wants to take into space. It’s his dream. The FBI puts him under surveillance when he tries to buy rocket fuel; the FAA stalls him when he files a flight plan - it’s post-9/11, after all. His wife is angry when she finds out their bank is initiating foreclosure. Charlie fears failure and decides, precipitously, to launch. Are twenty-first century American dreams just a sign of insanity? Are those who believe in dreamers only fools?

Nothing to scream over, and certainly little to shout about, this remake of Robert Wise’s 1963 classic from director Jan De Bont tries hard but fails to live up to the original. The 12 certificate says everything about this frightless wonder, which isn’t the least bit scary, maybe because it uses computer-generated animation to show all the poltergeist activity that was so effectively unseen in the original. Thinking they have been ushered to the notoriously haunted Hill House for an insomnia study, withdrawn Lili Taylor, bisexual Catherine Zeta-Jones and cynical Owen Wilson soon discover that they are really there to test out doctor Liam Neeson’s theories on the origins of fear. Hokey in the extreme, this horror is at least lifted by the quality cast, who all take it amazingly seriously, and the imposing and beautifully designed baroque sets.
