A crystal-meth addict struggles to get his next fix as he obsesses over a recent breakup in Spun, a black-comic drug drama from music video director Jonas Akerlund. Rushmore’s Jason Schwartzman stars as Ross, a young man who finds his maniacal world crumbling around him over the course of one long weekend. Spun chronicles Ross’ travails as he tries to score from his regular dealer, Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), who realizes during Ross’ visit that he’s misplaced his stash. Indisposed by the frantic drug search, Spider Mike’s girlfriend, Cookie (Mena Suvari), enlists Ross to pick up her stripper friend Nikki (Brittany Murphy) from work, and when he grudgingly agrees, he learns that Nikki might have an inside line on some of her own speed, courtesy of The Cook (Mickey Rourke). Meanwhile, two bumbling cops are onto Spider Mike’s trail, and in his paranoid-delusional state, he sets out to find out who set him up. Spun premiered at the 2002 CineVegas Film Festival before securing berths at the Sundance, Toronto, and South by Southwest festivals.

An ex-cop trying to stay away from trouble finds it literally crashing into his backyard in this crime thriller. Dave Robicheaux (Alec Baldwin) is a former New Orleans police detective who, after kicking an addiction to alcohol and confronting some serious problems with his partners, has left law enforcement behind to run a bait shop in a small Louisiana bayou town. One day, Dave and his wife Annie (Kelly Lynch) see a small plane plummet from the sky and crash into the swamp; the pilot dies, but Dave is able to rescue a young Hispanic girl from the wreckage. Dave and Annie take the child in, but as they try to find out more about the plane crash and who the little girl might be, they discover that she’s actually an illegal alien from Salvador and that the pilot was involved with a local drug ring. Dave, constitutionally unable to let a mystery go unsolved, begins asking enough questions and making enough trouble that he finds himself on the bad side of his old High School friend Bubba Rocque (Eric Roberts). Bubba is a local crime boss who controls the area’s drug traffic, keeps a boxing ring in his front yard, and has a wife Claudette (Teri Hatcher) who enjoys greeting her guests naked. Dave’s inquiries eventually become too much for Bubba and his henchmen, and in the midst of a violent raid on their home, Annie is killed. Dave becomes obsessed with bringing Bubba and his men to justice and gets some unexpected help from Robin Gaddis (Mary Stuart Masterson), an exotic dancer with a heart of gold. While it was originally scheduled for release in 1994, Heaven’s Prisoners didn’t arrive on theater screens until two years later, by which time Teri Hatcher had risen to stardom on the TV series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

A perfectly ghastly entry in what was shaping up as an eagerly anticipated annual event, A&E’s end-of-Summer dramatization of a Spenser novel.

As I was initially fearful, the re-casting of Ernie Hudson was a blunder… a shaven head and a leather coat does not a “Hawk” make! The new co-henchman character of “Vinnie,” who didn’t have a line of dialogue in the entire screenplay, was infinitely more interesting. Hudson makes one long for the over-the-top version portrayed by Avery Brooks in the Robert Urich TV series and subsequent tele-flicks.

A man is forced to examine his headlong dive into chemically induced oblivion when he starts dragging someone else along with him in this independent drama. Dorian (Kirk Harris) is a gifted surgeon who has a severe problem outside the operating room — he is an alcoholic and cocaine abuser who is quickly losing his grip on his habit. Stumbling from all-night benders and reckless sexual escapades into surgery, Dorian’s habits have begun to worry his on-and-off girlfriend, Megan (Laurie Baranyay), and even his drug dealer, Teddy (Eric Roberts). Megan introduces Dorian to her close friend Anna (Camilla Overbye Roos), who recently lost her son in an auto accident. Anna immediately falls for Dorian and willingly follows him into his netherworld of decadence, but before long, Dorian begins to see where his lifestyle is taking both Anna and himself, and he realizes they both need to change before it’s too late. Intoxicating was scripted by leading-man Kirk Harris and was adapted from a story written by Harris and director Mark David.

Adversaries become wary allies in this free-wheeling action comedy. Hank Rafferty (Steve Zahn) is a Los Angeles Police Department officer who finds himself out of a job after he becomes involved in a violent altercation with police academy flunk-out Earl Montgomery (Martin Lawrence), escalating into a media event which brings the LAPD a wealth of bad publicity. Unable to find work, Hank finally takes a job as a “rent-a-cop” with a private security firm — and discovers to his annoyance that his new partner is Earl. While neither of them are thrilled to be working together on the lowest strata of the law enforcement community, the two find themselves dealing with bigger crime than they expected when they stumble across evidence of a elite smuggling network operated by criminal mastermind Nash (Eric Roberts). Hank and Earl want to put Nash out of business, and they try without success to persuade the police of the importance of the case. But before long they discover it’s not just Nash’s men who are after them, but two high-ranking LAPD officials, Lt. Washington (Bill Duke) and Detective McDuff (Colm Feore). National Security was directed by Dennis Dugan, who’d previously helmed antic comedies starring Adam Sandler and Chris Farley; this film also marked Martin Lawrence’s entry into the elite of Hollywood’s comedy stars, with Lawrence taking home a 20-million-dollar paycheck for his work on the picture.

French/Israeli filmmaker Eyal Sivan has fashioned an unusual documentary about the Holocaust from video footage (originally shot for American television) of the 1961 trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. Using sophisticated editing techniques and digital image manipulation to give the visuals a distinctive look, Un Specialiste/The Specialist focuses less on Eichmann as the monstrous architect of one of the 20th century’s most heinous crimes, and more on a subtly terrifying notion: Eichmann was a seemingly ordinary and mild-mannered fellow who was also capable of planning the mass evacuation of Jews and other “undesirables” to extermination camps, denying any legal responsibility with the words: “That was unfortunate, but it wasn’t my fault.” Along with extensive footage of Eichmann’s testimony, Sivan also devotes significant screen time to testimony of survivors of the death camps. Un Specialiste/The Specialist was screened at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival’s as part of a special program entitled “Documents Against Forgetting.”
