Cold Creek Manor

Cold Creek Manor

Absolutely ludicrous from its hokey start to senseless finish, the only shock in this ersatz haunted house thriller is that Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) considered it worth directing. When city slickers Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone move to a dilapidated country mansion, they face redneck prejudice and sinister threats from former owner and ex-con Stephen Dorff, who wants to keep a dark family secret buried there. With every plot twist telegraphed well in advance, the best thing to do is sit back and stoically tick off each plodding spooky cliché as it appears. Complete with Dorff emanating badness from scene one and his trailer-trash girlfriend (Juliette Lewis) and her inscrutable sheriff sister (Dana Eskelson) refusing to believe the patently obvious, nothing makes sense in this technically proficient but bogus horror. More hilarious than creepy — Dorff infesting the house with poisonous snakes is embarrassingly overacted — think cold, creaky mannerisms instead.

Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play serial killers turned into folk heroes by media excesses in this striking movie that was criticised by original story author Quentin Tarantino after it was largely rewritten by director Oliver Stone and others. Ambitious, unrelenting and inventive, Stone’s controversial landmark film excites the intellect while bludgeoning the senses. It blends naturalistic violence with stylised visuals and commandeers every available cinematic trick, plus the TV sitcom format, to put across its searing message. Stone utilises a dazzling range of technique to underscore the media’s obsession with violent crime, and delivers one of the most arrestingly provocative additions to the debate since A Clockwork Orange. Love it or hate it, this all-out image assault is a unique if disturbing experience.

It’s Christmas time - Clark decided to invite all the family to have ‘the most fun-filled old-fashioned family Christmas’, which nobody shall ever forget. When the first relatives arrive, Clark soon flees on the roof to rig the lighting. The one thing the loving father wants to surprise the whole family with is the installation of a pool, which he already ordered. Unfortunately, the bonus check Clark expects any minute is overdue - and tempers rise, but not only because of the check. A big event is the arrival of uninvited cousin Eddie with his family in their mobile home, as well as a little sledding afternoon with a new lubricant from Clark’s company, or his shifting relationship with the very hip and clean neighbours. Cousin Eddie chooses to top off all presents with his very own special creation, only intending to deliver a real reason to be jolly.

Delivering everything you’d expect from a splatter-action horror bearing scriptwriter Quentin Tarantino’s name, this in-your-face shocker from director Robert Rodriguez juggles sharp dialogue, excessive violence, great special effects and bad taste with stylish verve. Tarantino and George Clooney play two crooks heading south of the border, who take preacher Harvey Keitel’s family hostage and end up under attack from bloodthirsty vampires, undead strippers and Hell’s Angels when they hide out in a sleazy Mexican bar. Energetic film-making and engaging performances keep this hilarious gore-fest firing on all its raucously tongue-in-cheek cylinders.

Starsky & Hutch

By cleverly respecting his source material and skewering some much-loved clichés, co-writer/director Todd Phillips (Old School) nails the big-screen version of TV cop show Starsky and Hutch. The casting of Ben Stiller as by-the-book detective David Starsky and Owen Wilson as laid-back chancer Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson couldn’t be better. Both are clearly having enormous fun in this entertaining buddy movie that neatly captures the 1970s film-making style and adds some hilarious homoeroticism to their relationship. Grudgingly paired up, the mismatched duo learn to rely on each other while bringing a drugs lord (Vince Vaughn) to justice for peddling a cocaine variant that even sniffer dogs can’t detect. Rap star Snoop Dogg delivers a great Huggy Bear and Will Ferrell is sidesplitting in a cameo as a dragon-obsessed convict. But it’s Phillips’s eye for the disco decade’s details and the show’s kitsch iconography that ensures a good time is had by old fans and newcomers alike.
