She caught the eye of the great director 'Alfred Hitchcock (I)' (qv), who gave her starring roles in Birds, The (1963) and Marnie (1964). Despite lacking the wit that distinguished Stuart’s first film outing, this amusing sequel will still appeal to those who were delighted by the original. In this adventure, Stuart (expertly voiced by Michael J Fox) falls for a flighty little bird, Margalo (Melanie Griffith), but doesn’t realise that she’s under the control of a villainous falcon (James Woods) and is actually after Mrs Little’s wedding ring. Directed by Rob Minkoff (who co-directed The Lion King), this blend of live action and animation is technically superb — the scenes of Stuart whizzing through New York on a skateboard or in a tiny bi-plane are both exciting and convincing — but its real charm lies in the balance it maintains between enchantment and the everyday.

Yikes, is this bad! Fresh-faced debutant Alec Baldwin must have wondered what sort of business he was getting into as he watched Israeli director Amos Kollek cobble together this unmitigated disaster of a movie. It was much worse for German star Hanna Schygulla because she had placed an international reputation on the line (although heaven only knows why). Debbie Harry got it right, however — cameo, get paid and run. Released on video as Crazy Streets, this is a fish-out-of-water story that should have been thrown back. You won’t see a worse film on TV this year.

It was a thankless task, putting Vladimir Nabokov’s notorious 1955 novel on the screen. But after Stanley Kubrick’s valiant, inventive and funny attempt in 1961 (which Nabokov himself scripted), why try again? To be fair, this 1997 version isn’t as sacrilegious as it might have been, with the flashy, superficial Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal) at the helm. However, it is Lyne’s bid for artistic “respectability” (the artful shots, the fidelity to the book) that is also the film’s undoing. It looks good, but lacks danger. Despite a compelling, tortured turn from Jeremy Irons as Humbert — and a seductive one from Dominique Swain as Lolita — it’s all a little too cosmetic and soft-focused. Although some might say that makes it even more insidiously controversial.

Cat Storm (Dominique Swain) is a bored high school girl in New York City who follows her petulant, rich friends from one coming-of-age adventure to another. They experiment with cruelty, rudeness, brazenness, and idiocy before moving onto sex and drugs. Cat’s best friend, Delilah (Bijou Phillips), is kicked out of school for using cocaine (her father’s), forcing Cat to become best friends with Grace (Mischa Barton), who guides her into the arms of William (Brad Renfro), the boy Cat’s had a crush on for some time. Eventually they all wind up at a luxurious country estate for a weekend of drugs, passion, and, inevitably, gruesome murder.
