Movies starring Shirley MacLaine

Known as the girl with big red curls and weak ankles, Shirley MacLaine was born as Shirley MacLean Beaty on April 24, 1934, to Virginia native Ira Owens Beaty and his wife, Kathlyn. Ira and Kathlyn gave up their dreams to raise their family. Before Shirley was three years old, her brother and rival 'Warren Beatty' (qv) was born on March 30 or 31, 1937. Shirley was the tallest in her ballet classes at the Washington School of Ballet. She had an excellent batting average in baseball but, as she discovered, it wasn't a good thing for a girl to do, so she tossed aside her cleats for a pair of pom- ...  show all

Sarah Huttington, recently engaged, goes home to Pasadena with fiancé Jeff for a family wedding. She hears a rumor that “The Graduate” (book and movie) are based on her family. Did her grandmother and her mom have flings with the same man just before her parents married? Is she a strange man’s child; does this explain why she doesn’t fit in? Was her mother happy? Is she too facing a loveless marriage? Where can she seek answers: her mother’s dead, her father’s a pleasant naïf. Ask her salty grandma? Better to ask the man in the triangle, the real Benjamin Braddock. With Jeff’s blessing, Sarah heads for San Francisco, looking for the key to her past and to her future.

Clint Eastwood plays a quizzical, slightly bemused cowboy in this immensely enjoyable Don Siegel caper, saving nun Shirley MacLaine from a fate worse than death in the Mexican desert. The two leads are perfectly paired, and MacLaine in particular turns in a great comic performance as her ill-fitting habit begins to slip. Siegel keeps the tension and pace roaring along as he pitches his stars into the middle of the Mexican Revolution and all its attendant mayhem, though some may find the final, gory battle scene out of kilter with the light-hearted tone of the rest of the movie.

Toil and trouble sums up this tepid rehash of 1960s sitcom Bewitched from Nora Ephron — a lot of effort seems to have gone into making a real mess. Co-writer/director Ephron betrays a profound misunderstanding of the show’s appeal by taking a sexy and sassy character and replacing her with a simpering idiot. It’s no wonder that Nicole Kidman appears so self-conscious in the role. She plays Isabel, a real-life witch who is offered the part of Samantha (a suburban wife and secret witch, originally played by Elizabeth Montgomery) in a remake of the show. It could have been a clever premise, but Ephron throws so much else into the cauldron that it all turns stodgy. Thankfully, Will Ferrell conjures up some laughs as Kidman’s mortal love interest, with an impassioned monologue about a missing dog being one of few memorable scenes. Unfortunately, even his gift for improvisation isn’t enough to save the asinine plot.
