Miracle at St. Anna

Spike Lee’s World War II film Miracle at St. Anna begins in 1983 with Hector Negron, a veteran of that war, unexpectedly shooting a customer dead. Police discover that the suspect, a quiet postal worker, kept a statue head worth millions of dollars in his apartment. An eager young reporter (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) interviews Negron in his cell about the mysterious artifact. While serving in the all-minority 92nd “Buffalo Soldier” Division, Negron and three comrades managed to sneak deep into enemy territory in Italy. One of the men, Sam Train (Omar Benson Miller), picked the head up while they were serving in Florence and believes it brings him good luck. Negron (Laz Alonso), Train, and Bishop Cummings (Michael Ealy), along with their sergeant, Aubrey Stamps (Derek Luke), take refuge in the Italian village of St. Anna, harbored by locals who are resisting the Nazis — who themselves surround the area. Train also protects an injured Italian boy he discovers while investigating a seemingly abandoned dwelling. Eventually, the soldiers make contact with their superiors, and are ordered to capture a German so that he may be interrogated about an upcoming attack. Lee adapted Miracle at St. Anna from a novel by James McBride, who also penned the screenplay.

In Dr. Simpson’s quest to ensure that no more children fall sick or die, she discovers that the townspeople blame the orphans for infecting the entire town, and would like to see the orphanage shut down completely. When the locals reject Dr. Simpson based primarily on the fact that she’s a woman, she falls back on her faith, and her friendships with her best friend Annie (Haylie Duff) and town blacksmith Lee (Jordan Bridges) to win their trust.

Writer/director Jeff Fisher, who cut his teeth directing episodes of such popular reality shows as The Simple Life and The Real World/Road Rules Challenge, make his feature directorial debut with this slasher satire about a television crew being stalked by a murderous psychopath. Up and coming television director Jake Tanner is out of a job. The reality show he was working on, “Back to the Ranch,” has been cancelled, and now his agent has landed him a job as replacement director on yet another reality show - this one tracing the unlikely winning streak of a North Dakota high school hockey team. The first order of business for Jake is to contend with demanding celebutante Blanca Champion, who has been hired on as a production assistant. But Blanca doesn’t seem to be taking the job too seriously, because when she’s not taking cat naps or hitting on the local teenage boys, she spends most of her time researching an upcoming film role that she hopes will be her big breakthrough. Later, when Tanner’s crew-members start disappearing, Blanca proves to be the least of his worries. The body count is piling up fast, but who could be responsible? Is it the bible-thumping ex-convict from the backwoods, the short-fused hockey coach, or perhaps the producer with an unhealthy fixation on ratings?
