In this teenage horror film, a young man avoids the hand of death, only to find that he can’t get away from it so easily. On the way to Paris with his high-school French club, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) has a vivid premonition of the plane crashing and killing all its passengers. After Alex and some other passengers demand to be let off the flight, his premonition turns out to be true, and the jet explodes during takeoff. While the FBI is convinced that Alex was involved in some kind of foul play, the passengers who got off the flight are all dying in horrible ways, as if whoever determined that the passengers would perish is punishing those who cheated death. Final Destination marked the feature directorial debut of James Wong, a producer and director for the TV series The X Files.

Two generations of radical bikers face off in this rubber-burning action drama. Manuel “Smoke” Galloway (Laurence Fishburne) is the leader of the Black Knights, an underground motorcycle club. Smoke, like most of his fellow Knights, is a successful white collar worker who can afford fancy leathers and top quality bikes, and Smoke has earned a reputation as the “King of Cali,” willing take on anyone in a drag race, legal or no. Kid (Derek Luke) is a gifted young rider whose father was once Smoke’s mechanic; when Kid’s dad died after an accident, Kid set out to become the best biker he could be to carry on his father’s name and reputation. Smoke, however, has no room in the Black Knights for Kid, and so he and several fellow outcast riders start their own club, the Biker Boyz, and challenge Smoke to prove once and for all who is the fastest rider on the scene. Biker Boyz also features appearances from Orlando Jones, Lisa Bonet, Djimon Hounsou, Larenz Tate, and Kid Rock.

Independent filmmaker Gregg Araki has probably set a record for low budgets in this current feature The Long Weekend. It came in at around $5,000 and yet was shown in legit moviehouses to respectful (if not overwhelmingly positive) reviews. As with his other movies, the central characters in this one are gay, lesbian or bisexual, and the setting is in Los Angeles. The story concerns the efforts of angst-ridden gay man to cope with his bisexual lover’s antics, and the parallel efforts of a lesbian woman to ditch her dimwitted girlfriend.
