A high-school senior finds that fate (and modern medicine) plays some interesting tricks with his personality in this dramatic comedy. Justin Conn (Lou Taylor Pucci) is a neurotic teenager who has a difficult time with his peers, especially Rebecca (Kelli Garner), a cute girl in his debate class with whom he is somewhat mutually infatuated. It isn’t much better at home with his obnoxious younger brother Joel (Chase Offerle), his father, Mike (Vincent D’Onofrio), who is busy having a midlife crisis, and mother Audrey (Tilda Swinton), who’s infatuated with one of her favorite TV actors (Benjamin Bratt). All this anxiety has to go somewhere, and Justin’s manifestation of his troubles comes in the form of sucking his thumb, which makes him even more of an outcast. Dr. Perry Lyman (Keanu Reeves), an orthodontist who seems to double as a new age therapist, treats Justin with hypnosis; meanwhile, the school psychologist decides he has Attention Deficit Disorder, and treats him with medication. Suddenly, Justin stops sucking his thumb and becomes an outgoing overachiever, single-handedly taking his school debate team to the state championship. But Justin’s relationshop with his debate coach, Mr. Geary (Vince Vaughn), becomes strained, and the boy tries to mold yet another new identity for himself. Thumbsucker was the first feature film from Mike Mills, who previously distinguished himself in commercials and music videos.

A young couple traveling a lonely stretch of Las Vegas highway discover that they’re not alone on the road in director James Lay’s dark sci-fi thriller. Megan and Dylan were somewhere between Vegas and Reno when they decided to stop at a roadside restaurant to fill their empty stomachs and rest their weary eyes. Upon discovering that the notorious Area 51 is just a few short miles away, the curious travelers quickly get back behind the wheel in hopes that the shroud of midnight will give them the opportunity to get a glimpse of the top-secret military instillation. Strange things have been known to occur on this radiation-poisoned stretch road that runs through a former nuclear testing ground, though, and soon after an unsettling speech by Adolf Hitler takes over the couple’s car radio, the entire vehicle suddenly dies. When a mysterious visitor from another time seems to materialize in the rear window before their very eyes, Megan and Dylan flee the car only to find that, in the unforgiving darkness of the desert, their strange journey has just begin.

Martin Scorsese directed this fast-moving, epic-scale biopic documenting the life and loves one of the most colorful Americans of the 20th century, Howard Hughes. The Aviator follows Hughes (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) as the twentysomething millionaire, having already made a fortune improving the design of oil-drilling bits, comes to Hollywood with an interest in getting into the picture business. It doesn’t take long for Hughes, with his passion for airplanes, to jump from producer to director of his first major film project, a World War I air epic called Hell’s Angels, which took three years to complete thanks to the shift from silent to sound filming and Hughes’ relentless perfectionism. However, the film was a massive hit, and the eccentric inventor became a mogul in Hollywood, making Jean Harlow (Gwen Stefani) a star and enjoying a romance with Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett). But Hollywood’s old-boy network never fully accepted Hughes, and in time his passion for flying began to reclaim his attentions as he began designing new planes, setting air speed records, flying around the world, and risking his life testing aircraft. Hughes also found time to romance Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale) and founded his own airline, Trans-World Airlines, though as his ideas became bolder, his approach became more eccentric, and he gained many powerful enemies, including the head of Pan-American Airlines, Juan Trippe (Alec Baldwin), and Senator Ralph Owen Brewster (Alan Alda), who attempted to prove that Hughes’ radical design ideas were actually part of an effort to bilk taxpayers for millions of dollars through government contracts. The Aviator’s star-studded cast also includes John C. Reilly, Jude Law, Willem Dafoe, Ian Holm, and Frances Conroy.
