A would-be illusionist tries to create some magic for himself and his friends in this comic road movie. Max (Til Schweiger) is a struggling professional magician who has a great act, once you get past the fact that most of his tricks don’t work very well. One day, Max meets Hugo (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), a thief who boasts all the skill and expertise in his line of work that Max lacks in prestidigitation. Max is convinced he and Hugo would be an unbeatable combination in Las Vegas, so Hugo steals a van and they hit the road for Nevada, after convincing pretty waitress Lydia (Claire Forlani) to tag along as Max’s assistant and Hugo’s potential significant other. When the trio hits Las Vegas, they encounter Milo (Alan Arkin), a longtime magician and manager who thinks Max has the right stuff to be a success — until he sees him perform. Magicians was directed by James Merendino, who previously directed the independent cult hit SLC Punk.

Upon learning that the last person standing will be permitted to leave the residence with $5 million, the paranoid prisoners struggle for survival as the evening’s events quickly turn deadly and the body count steadily begins to rise. A gifted artist wages a personal war against his demons as well as a world that refuses to accept his creative vision in this biographical drama based on the true story of Amedeo Modigliani. Modigliani (Andy Garcia) was an Italian Jew who was living in Paris in the 1910s, when the city’s bohemian community was in full flower. While Modigliani was a uniquely gifted painter and sculptor, his friend and rival Pablo Picasso (Omid Djalili) had already found fame and fortune; Modigliani’s work had yet to reach a significant audience beyond the city’s creative inner circle. Though Modigliani stubbornly refused to compromise his vision for the sake of sales, he was alternately troubled and enraged by the lack of acceptance for his art, and was known to buffer his bruised ego with alcohol and opium, which made his often unpredictable and sometimes violent behavior all the more volatile. Modigliani also had a mistress, Jeanne Hebuterne (Elsa Zylberstein), who had been disowned by her wealthy family for falling in love with a Jew and having his child out of wedlock. When Hebuterne discovered she was pregnant again, Modigliani faced pressure to marry her, and had to face the practical question of how to support his offspring. Modigliani’s fate rested upon winning an annual art competition in Paris, which would have given him a needed influx of cash, leaving him understandably enraged when Picasso also chose to enter a work in the contest.

Adapted for stage and screen several times over the past century, French author Francois Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel Les Liasons Dangeureuses was the basis for this Academy Award-winning Stephen Frears film. The plot is motivated by a cruel wager between the beautiful but debauched Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close) and her misogynistic former lover, the Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovitch). The Marquise challenges Valmont to seduce the virginal Cecile de Volanges (Uma Thurman) before the girl can be wed. Valmont offers a more difficult counter-challenge: He bets the Marquise that he will be able to bed the very moral and very married Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer). In the course of carrying out his plan, Valmont is stricken with a sudden case of honor and remorse, while the Marquise becomes all the more vicious.
