A man finds himself getting an unexpected crash course in the psychology of contemporary women in this romantic comedy. Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is a successful advertising executive living in Chicago who has long fancied himself a ladies’ man, though he has precious little understanding of women beyond figuring out how to seduce them. One day, Nick receives a substantial electric shock in an accident in his bathroom; while he’s not seriously injured, when he comes to, he discovers something remarkable has happened — he can suddenly hear what women are thinking. At first, Nick finds himself learning all sorts of things he didn’t want to know, but he also realizes how this can be used to his advantage — especially after his old boss, Dan Wanamaker (Alan Alda) is replaced by a woman, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt). But Nick begins to feel differently about his unusual gift when he discovers Darcy is infatuated with him, and he finds himself falling for her. What Women Want also features Bette Midler as Nick’s analyst, Delta Burke and Valerie Perrine as two of his co-workers, and Marisa Tomei as one of Nick’s significant others.

A hard-nosed star reporter learns who her real friends are — and gets in way over her head — investigating a murder in this twisty thriller. Perfect Stranger stars Halle Berry as Rowena, a prominent New York journalist who writes using a pseudonym to entrap some of the tri-state area’s most corrupt individuals, using a network of informants, acquaintances, and digital gadgets. When her latest expos? is buried at the behest of her paper’s corporate backers, she walks off the job and into a personal quagmire. Her childhood friend Grace (Nicki Aycox) is murdered when she threatens to reveal she’s been sleeping with married advertising mogul Harrison Hill (Bruce Wills). With the help of her loyal techie friend Miles (Giovanni Ribisi), she goes undercover — and online — to find the smoking gun that will indict Hill. But Rowena soon finds herself caught in a web of manipulation, deceit, and false truths.

Independent filmmaker Gregg Araki has probably set a record for low budgets in this current feature The Long Weekend. It came in at around $5,000 and yet was shown in legit moviehouses to respectful (if not overwhelmingly positive) reviews. As with his other movies, the central characters in this one are gay, lesbian or bisexual, and the setting is in Los Angeles. The story concerns the efforts of angst-ridden gay man to cope with his bisexual lover’s antics, and the parallel efforts of a lesbian woman to ditch her dimwitted girlfriend.

Nigel, the main character in the psychological crime thriller Last Exit, owes money to some very bad men. He gets no support at home where his marriage provides simply more stress. He lucks into a job storing stolen goods for a criminal he knows as The President. Nigel soon makes the acquaintance of a prostitute who works for The President. Nigel and the Prostitute engage in a dangerous affair, one that might quickly lead to Nigel’s demise.
